Advancing Naturopathic Medicine in all 50 States!

Please note – this is the temporary home for the next rendition of The Run… Please visit therun.org on August 01 to truly experience and engage in what’s next. Meanwhile, plug in:

The Run – it’s a Collaboration…

Currently, Naturopathic Medicine is licensed in 19 states (almost 20) with a combined population of 113 million people. Thirty pre-licensed states with a total population of 213 million are still not regulated. This means that two thirds of the American people, who live in these pre-licensed states, do not have access to and/or are unaware of Naturopathic Medicine and its benefits. To reiterate: most Americans have not heard of naturopathic medicine and are unaware of its benefits. This knowledge gap must be rectified, so that every American has the right to choose naturopathic healthcare. Twenty-two states and territories have successfully overcome all obstacles to provide naturopathic healthcare. We must move forward with the laurels of their success and pursue licensure for the remaining 30-31 states.

Awareness of Naturopathic Medicine across the nation continues to grow, and we must persevere with our efforts. We need to spread the word and educate our fellow citizens about the value of Naturopathic Medicine. We all know that knowledge is a powerful tool, and we must move forward with our goal to license NDs in all 50 states by 2025. State licensure is the most significant means to gain both the awareness of and access to the practice of Naturopathic Medicine.

It is important to recognize that the destinies of both licensed and pre-licensed states are bound together. It would be extremely beneficial if NDs and patients in licensed states would rally together to help the pre-licensed states accomplish their goal of attaining licensure. Why? Quite simply, the more states that become licensed in naturopathic medicine, the greater the security and significance an existing ND license has.

Naturopathic Doctors are valuable assets to the health of all Americans. It is time for us to let everyone know that our knowledge, skills and tools are indispensible!

The Run: Advancing Naturopathic Medicine in All 50 States, is ready to carry the torch for the AANP’s commitment to licensing all 50 states for Naturopathic Medicine. The previous run in 2011 from San Francisco to Bridgeport, CT raised awareness of naturopathic medicine across the U.S. and is now back, reenergized and focused on state by state licensure for all 50 states.

It is important to remember that in every great movement for truth and social change, the minority, Gandhi said, must lead the majority, and that:

“All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.” Arthur Schopenhauer

The Truth: Naturopathic Medicine has proven to be extremely safe and effective in restoring health. The Run will articulate this successful paradigm of healthcare and deliver this message across the remaining pre-licensed states. As a result, the American people will be empowered with knowledge of naturopathic medicine and have the freedom and right to choose natural medicine to heal and thrive.

The two primary goals of the Run:

1) To attain licensure for Naturopathic Doctors in ALL 50 states and U.S Territories. The duration of each event will be 50 miles to symbolically demonstrate licensing in all 50 states. The starting point of each run will 50 miles from the capitol (e.g. our first scheduled run from historic Jamestown to the capitol in Richmond). Duration of the event will be a period of 3 days.

2) To encourage Naturopathic Doctors nationwide to unite and to promote the naturopathic profession throughout ALL 50 states and U.S. Territories.

Run Outline – Schedule of Events:
Arrival in the pre-licensed state from California and elsewhere on Friday evening
Start the 50-mile run on Saturday morning with media kickoff
Conclusion of The Run would be on Monday about 12 pm at the Capitol carrying hundreds of local patient testimonials for legislators – ideally culminating in a discussion with state legislators, possibly on the state association’s Lobby Day
Fundraising dinner – Saturday night – to be sponsored by a nutritional company or laboratory that would benefit from all 50 states being licensed for naturopathic medicine; patients giving testimonials; speeches by local and nationally-known NDs; other supportive members of the community discussing why licensing is essential, etc.
Dignitaries, and media would be invited
The runners will be supported during the 50-mile run by the state association (food, vehicle support, airport pick-up/drop-off, etc.)

It is my experience drawn from previous runs dating back to 1978, that when a person believes in something strongly enough to put their body on the line, the media and others listen. The media dubbed our run across the USA in 1984-85, a “Run of Conscience.” One could say that the runners have “earned the right to be heard.”

The Run can assist in attaining state licensure for NDs by generating the following:
Media exposure because of the human interest in The Run
Raising money for the state association
Inspiring NDs from all over the country to work together to support state association’s licensing efforts
Energizing the base (NDs and patients), and many more intangibles that will, no doubt arise when people are committed

When all or most of the 50 states become licensed, more patients will receive the health benefits. Additionally, due to heightened awareness, the naturopathic profession will grow and prosper throughout the USA.

The 50-mile runs are already a reality and ready to launch. The next 50-mile run has been scheduled in Virginia, late January/early February 2018 with sponsorship by Virginia Association of Naturopathic Physicians.

Request:
Every naturopathic institution and individual ND to promote the runs in their circle of influence, via social media, email newsletters, media contacts, student organizations, etc. Currently, the 50-state licensing committee (AANP’s State Alliance), INM, AANP and the VAANP are extremely supportive.

Statements of support from organizations and individuals, and organizational help wherever possible.

Please note, The Run is NOT requesting financial support from naturopathic institutions. The goal is to raise money for the state associations in their effort to get licensed. The Run national steering committee is now being formed.

The Run Steering Committee:
Dennis Godby, ND, founder of The Run; AANP and CNDA Public Affairs; AANP Diversity Chair; BOD, Institute of Natural Medicine

Patricia Diefenbach, ND, CNS, CPT, President of VAANP

Traci Hobson, JD, LLM, Director of State Relations, American Association of Naturopathic Physicians
